Health And Safety Policy



To provide a safe and healthy environment for everyone in school.


The requirement to provide a safe and healthy working environment for all Staff, pupils and visitors is acknowleged with the School management who recognise and take responsibility for compliance with the statutory requirements of the local national guidelines – Ministerstwo Pracy i Polityki Socjalnej – Bill of 26.09.1997 with later amendmets.


Accidents – See First Aid Policy


The First Aid boxes are located in the School Office,  School Hall, Science Room, Art Room, Maintenance Area and by Entrance 3. A designated Teacher is responsible for checking the contents and restocking as soon as possible after use.

There is another box located in the Nursery Staff room. The Nursery Teachers are responsible for checking the contents and restocking this box. Ice cubes are stored in the fridge in the Lunch Room, Nursery Staff Room, Staff Room and Principal's Office for application to bumps and bruises.



Any accident should be recorded in the Accident book in the School Office with:

  • The date and time of the incident
  • The name of the injured person
  • a description of the incident, details of the injury and any action taken.
  • What happened to the person immediately afterwards
  • The signature of the persons dealing with the incident
  •  Parents should be told of any incident.

In the event of an injury that cannot be dealt with at school, appropriate action should be taken, either by calling professional medical help or an ambulance, and parents informed. An emergency phone contact list is on the board in the School Office.

Curriuculum safety (including out of School learning activities).

All Teaching Staff to undertake suitable (written) Risk Assessments prior to commencing hazardous activities, or when using specific equipment for curriculum purposes e.g. Cooking or Science Equipment.


Fire – See Fire Policy


If you discover a fire.

Notify the Principal/School Secretary.


  1. Line up your class and direct them out of the building.         
  1. Check that the classroom is clear and close door.
  2. Remember to check toilets for pupils as you leave the building.      
  3. Assemble pupils outside.
  4. Collect register from Principal or School Secretary.
  5. Check class against register and report to Principal.  
  6. Return to supervise class and await dismissal by Principal.


All staff should make themselves and their pupils familiar with the positions of fire alarms, exits, extinguishers and hose reels.

Gas Safety

The gas is checked regularly by the local gas board.


Glass & Glazing

All glass in doors, side panels to be safety glass and all replacement glass is to of safety standard. Assessment of premises is carried out by the Principal and School Premises Officer to establish whether there are areas which are unsuitable for use by children due to glass being of low standard.


Grounds Safety/Security

The grounds of the school are gated and locked out of hours. During school session the main gate is closed but unlocked remotely to allow visitor access. All fire doors are unlocked and access is kept clear. All visitors must sign in and receive a Visitor's Card.


Hazardous Substances (COSHH)

All COSHH materials are stored in an area out of bounds for pupils.


Housekeeping – Storage, cleaning & waste disposal

The School is effectively cleaned and the work of the cleaners is monitored by the Polish Director. The School has sufficient and safe storage. Rubbish is collected daily from bins in school and placed away from the building in appropriate bulk waste containers. The cleaners mop floors after school hours and wet floor signs are used to warn staff. After lunch the dining hall floor is swept and spillages are mopped. Wet floor signs are used as necessary. Glass is disposed of carefully and separate from other refuse so that accidental cuts are prevented. Where possible materials are recycled.


Handling & Lifting

Staff undergo training for handling and lifting and are aware of the guidelines. Children are also taught safe lifting of equipment. Eg. PE apparatus.


Maintenance/Inspection of Work Equipment (including selection of equipment)

PE equipment is checked annually.

Regular checks of electrical equipment are carried out.

Fire fighting equipment is serviced annually by specialist contractors.

All site maintenance equipment is checked regularly by the School Premises Officer.



Staff are not allowed to administer any medicines. Children who need medication in school must be able to give themselves a measured dose provided from home, or a parent should come and administer the dose to the child. Ventolin inhalers may be kept in school clearly labelled with the child's name. The school should be told of any medical condition that could require emergency treatment (e.g. bee sting allergy, food allergies – nuts, etc.).

Teachers may assist pupils with diabetes, with their insulin pumps and epipens in the case where Parents have informed the School and asked for assistance. The Teachers should then be trained by a member of Staff of the local Health Centre.


Monitoring the Policy

Health and Safety is a regular agenda item at Staff meetings.


Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

All members of staff wear plastic gloves when dealing with bodily fluids and hazardous substances.


Reporting Defects

The Polish Director and School Premises Officer make regular inspections of the school. If other defects are brought to their attention it is the Principal’s responsibility to make sure the defect is made safe by arranging repair and then organising interim arrangements until the defect is repaired.


Risk Assessments

Teachers are responsible for writing Risk Assessments of educational visits and curricular activities that have potential hazards.


Safety in classrooms

Children will be taught the safest way to handle all small equipment, tools and art materials. Teachers will ensure sensible safe behaviour. Children will be taught how to handle and carry PE equipment safely.


School Trips

Doors to both the main school and the Nursery have security locks.

Pupils may not leave the school building during school hours unescorted.

If a group of pupils go out, there must be a supervisor in front and behind the group and the children walk in an orderly line.


Signs and Signal

Fire exit signs are displayed appropriately.

No smoking is permitted on the school site at any time.

Training and development

The Principal is responsible for induction. New members of Staff must read the Health and Safety policy. They are familiarised with action to be undertaken in the event of a fire alarm and in the event of accidents and illnesses.

All staff are encouraged to take regular breaks when working on the computer and IWB presentations for staff.


Vehicles on Site

There is a Staff car parking area on the School site. Children are not allowed to enter this area.


Violence to Staff

All staff warned not to put themselves in danger by being alone with an aggressive parent or other person. If they feel threatened members of staff are advised to send for help and not be positioned in a room so that their exit could be blocked. If a member of staff is the victim of violence (verbal or physical) the police should be called by another member of staff. All incidents of verbal or physical violence should be reported to the Principal and where appropriate injuries recorded in the accident book.



The School Premises Officer regularly inspects the school to ensure that welfare facilities at least meet the minimum standards for temperature, ventilation, lighting, water supply, washing facilities, toilets etc as required by the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations. If any member of staff has a concern about any welfare issue they must report it to the Principal.
